How to Clean & Maintain Your Helmet

A clean helmet lasts longer, smells better, and maintains its protective properties. Here is how to clean every component without damaging the materials that keep you safe.

Cleaning the Interior Liner

Most modern helmets have fully removable, washable liners and cheek pads. Remove them according to the manufacturer's instructions (typically snap or velcro attachments). Hand wash in lukewarm water with mild soap or baby shampoo — never use harsh detergents, bleach, or machine wash. Rinse thoroughly and air dry away from direct sunlight or heat sources. UV and heat degrade the foam backing on liner pads.

Cleaning the Outer Shell

For fiberglass and composite shells, use warm water and mild soap with a soft microfiber cloth. For stubborn bug splatter, lay a wet warm cloth over the affected area for several minutes to soften the residue before wiping. Avoid petroleum-based solvents, which can attack some shell resins and paint finishes. For polycarbonate shells, this is especially critical — poly shells are more chemically sensitive than composites.

Cleaning the Face Shield

Warm water, mild soap, and a microfiber cloth. Never use glass cleaner, ammonia-based products, or paper towels on helmet visors — they can damage anti-fog and anti-scratch coatings. If your helmet has a Pinlock insert, remove it before cleaning the main visor and clean it separately with the same gentle approach. Let both air dry; never wipe a Pinlock insert with a rough cloth.

Maintaining the Visor Mechanism

The visor pivot mechanism should move smoothly. If it feels gritty, remove the visor (most use a quick-release tab system) and wipe the pivot area with a damp cloth. A tiny amount of silicone lubricant on the pivot points restores smooth action. Do not use WD-40 or petroleum lubricants.

Storage

Store your helmet in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Use the included helmet bag if you have one. Never hang a helmet by the chin strap — it can stretch the retention system. Rest it on a flat surface or a helmet stand with the opening facing down to prevent dust accumulation in the liner.

Can I use Windex on my helmet visor?

No. Ammonia-based cleaners damage visor coatings. Use warm water and mild soap with a microfiber cloth only.
