Full-Face vs Modular Helmets

Published 2026-06-23 · MotorcycleHelmets.co

Full-face and modular helmets look similar when the chin bar is down, but the engineering differences affect safety, weight, noise, and daily usability. If you are torn between the two, here is an honest comparison.

Protection

Full-face helmets have a one-piece shell with an integral chin bar — no moving parts, no hinges, no potential failure points. The fixed chin bar is the strongest design for chin impact absorption. Modular helmets with dual homologation (P/J certification) have been tested and certified in both the open and closed positions. Premium modulars like the Shoei Neotec 3 meet ECE 22.06 in both configurations. However, the hinge mechanism adds a theoretical weak point that does not exist in full-face designs. Not all modular helmets are dual homologated — some are only certified closed.

Weight

Modular helmets are heavier due to the hinge mechanism, latch system, and additional shell material around the pivot. The Shoei Neotec 3 weighs approximately 4 pounds in medium; the full-face Shoei RF-1400 weighs 3.2 pounds. That 0.8-pound difference is noticeable on long rides, particularly for riders with neck issues.

Noise

The modular chin bar hinge creates additional gaps for wind intrusion, making most modulars louder than equivalent full-face helmets. The exception is the Schuberth C5, which uses meticulous aerodynamic engineering to match or beat many full-face helmets for noise levels.

Convenience

This is where modulars win decisively. Flip the chin bar up to drink water, eat, talk to someone, put on glasses, or breathe freely at stoplights. For touring riders who stop every 100 miles for fuel, the ability to open the helmet without removing it is a significant quality-of-life upgrade. ADV riders also benefit from flipping up to assess trail obstacles at low speeds.

Who Should Choose Which

Choose full-face if: you prioritize maximum protection, lightweight design, sport or track riding, or budget (full-face helmets are available at lower prices than equivalent modulars).

Choose modular if: you tour long distances, commute in stop-and-go traffic, wear glasses, or value the convenience of opening your helmet without removing it. Insist on dual homologation for safety.

Can I ride with my modular chin bar up?

Only if the helmet is dual homologated (P/J certified). Riding with a non-homologated modular helmet open means you are riding with an untested, unrated safety configuration. Even with dual homologation, riding open reduces aerodynamic stability and increases wind resistance on your neck.
